
Langflestir jarðskjálftar á Íslandi eru tengdir flekaskilunum sem ganga gegnum landið og stafa af spennu í jarðskorpunni sem safnast upp vegna færslu flekanna út frá skilunum.

Fyrstu vísbendingar um skjálftaupptök dýpra en 10 km komu í tengslum við gosið í Heimaey 1973. Með skjálftamælum sem settir voru upp eftir gosbyrjunina mátti staðsetja upptökin með nokkurri nákvæmni og reyndust svo til allir skjálftarnir eiga upptök á 15-25 km dýpi undir Heimaey. Á síðustu áratugum hafa næm og þétt skjálftamælakerfi leitt í ljós þyrpingar af djúpum skjálftum á ýmsum stöðum í nágrenni megineldstöðva. Sú virkasta er skammt ASA af Bárðarbungu. Myndin sýnir megineldstöðina Bárðarbungu og er tekin af Oddi Sigurðssyni 1996.
